I am not at all happy with this, but am posting it anyway as I doubt I'll get a chance to redo it. I struggled with a concept for this assignment. I was trying to portray a veteran begging for money while the department store is making money but my ideas for how to portray that all got way too complicated.
You may be right that your idea was a bit complicated, Roberta, but, on the other hand, I instantly got the idea of veterans being given quite an insult by the state of affairs. Sometimes pure emotion is enough in an editorial illustration. The begging cup may even be a distraction, since you don't have to be a beggar to be a be a beneficiary of H4H. The dirty sploge and his angry look convey a huge amount of emotion and get the idea across - this store has insulted hero vets. A relief to know from Selfridges it was an inadvertent error. Very strong!
