There are so many delightful aspects to this image. I never thought I could be so enthralled by dots! I suppose I need to credit both nature and Vanessa, but kudos to her for bringing them to us in such an appealing, mesmerising way.
The composition is one I would have thought wouldn't work, but to my amazement it's also intriguing. The black tails and the 'faces' balance out s nicely on the page. An uncanny achievement with just one fish drawing!
I love the delicacy of the line line work.
But on that note I feel the text is too heavy - from a different world and someone else's hand. Perhaps something lighter or more delicate could be tried.
A wonderful study, and surely one of the nicest uses of repetition I've seen in the course. The more I look the more the image pulls my attention into the details, even the psychology, of the fish. I feel engaged in their very being!
Hi again, Vanessa.
A caveat regarding my comments on your composition.
When I was viewing this, my screen was set to enlarge what was shown. Without realising it I was viewing only part of the image, seeing 'Waves' and (only) the top 3 groups of fish. Compositionally, I think that's stronger than what I later saw was the full image, with 4 groups of fish.
It's a problem that happens in the course because I ask for the assignment to be made on an A4 sheet, and don't offer advice about cropping in Week 1's Lesson. Compounded in this case by the settings on my view - oops.
You can see cropping advice here, if you haven't already reached this video: https://youtu.be/aPMPZq3-uec.
Sorry about slipping up there. But I'm still crazy about the fish!
