In the spirit of hand-made, I cut the flax, wove the kete (basket) then placed it on the scanner. 'Hei' means to suspend from the neck, 'Tiki' means human form. Often made from an old pounamu (greenstone) adze, hence the tomahawk shape. Said to represent growth, strength of character, clarity of thought, and in some cases fertility. Paua shell is embedded in the eyes. Other taonga include waka huia feather boxes, intricately carved with heads at each end and suspended from the rafters - valuables kept within.
